Identifying Audience and Purpose

Objectives

Students will be able to ..

• define audience and purpose
• identify the audience and purpose of a piece of writing

Procedure

1. Read Aloud: "It Starts with Me" on http://www.beliefnet.com

2. Students will go back over the article and annotate it looking for phrases and sentences that indicate who the audience it and what the purpose is.

3. Students will be put into groups of four. They will receive chart paper and have to make a chart indicating audience and purpose and giving evidence from the text.

4. We will share their findings.

Homework:

Make a list of 10 possible audiences and 10 possible purposes for writing

Assessment

Are students identifying audience and purposes correctly? Are they able to justify their opinions? Can they think of a variety of audiences and purposes?
